My Five Favorite Fish and Chips places in Australia
Status April 2005

Here's my top-five list of fish and chips restaurants I've eaten at while in Australia. I rank the top-five, loosely based on these criteria: 'freshness of fish' (Obvious); 'freshness of that slice of lemon' (Seriously it's so easy to make a slice of lemon look nice, but often you get some wrinkly, blotchy wedge); 'is tartar sauce free' (I know it's sacriledge to put anything but lemon or vinegar, but out of principle I put this one in. So far minus points for everyone - tartar sauce, mayo and tomato sauce are all extra. Kind of reminds me of Hungary in the early ninetees when McDonalds was worried about people stealing mayo for home-use - it's friggin' tartar sauce!); 'does the thin end of the fish taste slightly moldy' (This is the most common problem the fish piece usually has. The combination of the batter and the thin end of the fish often creates an off-taste that's not quiet mold but has that character. It's common and not harmful but distracts from the overall flavour.)

Anyway, here are the winners

1. Fish Frenzy - Hobart waterfront, Tasmania.

They use blue-eyed Travella for their fish which apparently can only be found in Tassie waters. It was yum yummy.

2. A Fish Called Coogee - Coogee, Sydney.

My fave in Sydney so far. Good on all accounts.

3. Fish and Flicks - Randwick, Sydney.

My neighborhood fave. Gets you discount for the Ritz cinema accross the street. Funny looking lemon once and chips are a bit undercooked sometimes.

4. Randwick Seafood - Randwick Jnc, Sydney.

Good seafood store that sells fried and fresh.

5. Cooked or Fresh Seafood - Coogee, Sydney.

Neat little place if 2. is too expensive for you (across the street from each other).

Bon Apetit!
